Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular national parks in the United States!
This means lots of people need a nice, cozy place to stay.
If you’re one of the many people planning a trip to Yosemite, you’re probably wondering: Where the heck should I stay?! 🤔
Yosemite is massive, with five entrances and five major regions, so figuring out where to base yourself can feel overwhelming.
Before booking a place, ask yourself these questions ⬇️
- What’s your budget?
- Which parts of the park do you plan to explore?
- Are you looking for luxury and comfort, or are you okay roughing it a bit?
- Would you prefer staying in a lively town with plenty of restaurants and shops?
There’s a lot to consider, and that’s exactly why I created this guide to help you find the perfect place to stay during your Yosemite adventure.
I’ve broken everything down by town, organized by the park entrance they’re closest to.
From there, I list different types of accommodations, including hotels, resorts, B&Bs, vacation rentals, campgrounds, and RV parks.
If you’re lucky enough to land a spot inside Yosemite National Park, that’s amazing! 🙌
Unfortunately, between the high prices and tough-to-get reservations, that’s not an option for everyone.
Don’t worry! There are plenty of great places to stay outside the park that won’t break the bank (but keep in mind, towns closer to Yosemite’s entrances will have higher prices).
My husband and I try to keep costs low whenever we can. But on rare occasions, we do splurge. 😉
Furthermore, if you don’t have a budget (love that for you), I included high-end, luxury options as well!
Let’s dive in and explore where to stay outside of Yosemite, based on your travel style, budget, and the parts of the park you plan to visit.

Yosemite National Park Overview + Map
🗺️ Location: Central California in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
🎟️ Fee: There is a $35 entrance fee (valid for 3 days) plus a reservation depending on when you visit.
✅ Pro Tip: If you’re planning to visit national parks more than 2 times this year, I recommend purchasing an America the Beautiful Pass. This pass covers entrance fees and standard amenity (day-use) fees at all U.S. national parks and federal recreation lands!
🕜 Park Hours: Yosemite is open year-round (24 hours per day, 365 days per year). Except Hetch Hetchy which is open from sunrise to sunset (daylight hours).
Some roads within Yosemite are closed from November to May/June depending on winter conditions, including Tioga Road, Glacier Point Road, and Mariposa Grove Road.
Check road conditions on nps.gov before your visit or call 209-372-0200 (press 1, then 1) for up-to-date road conditions.
🌄 Best Time to Visit: Yosemite is an incredible place year-round, but the most popular months to visit is May through October.
One of my personal favorite times to visit Yosemite is in May – warm weather, waterfalls raging, avoids peak summer crowds, and wildlife are out and about.
🚙 Transportation: Renting a vehicle is the most common option to get to Yosemite – check out rentalcars.com or discovercars.com.
There are also a few public transportation options, including YARTS, Amtrak, Greyhound, and Eastern Sierra Transit.

Figuring out where to stay outside of Yosemite can feel overwhelming. Mainly because the park is huge!
One of the best ways to make your decision easier is to get familiar with Yosemite’s layout.
The park is divided into five major regions and has five different entrances, each leading to different areas of the park.
All the roads essentially connect, but the drive time from one area to another can be insane.
Understanding where each entrance leads and what areas you want to explore will help you choose the best place to stay for your trip.
I’ll dive more into the drive times from each entrance to all the areas of Yosemite later, but for now, here’s a look at the regions and entrances of Yosemite.
🏞️ Yosemite’s major regions:
- Yosemite Valley
- Glacier Point
- Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Pass
- Mariposa Grove and Wawona
- Hetch Hetchy
🛣️ Yosemite’s entrances:
- South Entrance (Highway 41)
- Arch Rock Entrance (Highway 140)
- Big Oak Flat Entrance (Highway 120 from the west)
- Tioga Pass Entrance (Highway 120 from the east)
- Hetch Hetchy Entrance (Hetch Hetchy Road off Highway 120)
Places to Stay Inside Yosemite National Park
Staying inside Yosemite is the most convenient option, but it’s often expensive and reservations can be tough to get.
That said, if you’re hoping to stay within park boundaries, there are several options to choose from, including luxury hotels, upscale canvas tents, simple campgrounds, and cozy rental cabins and homes.
Yosemite Valley
- The Ahwahnee Hotel (luxury hotel)
- Yosemite Valley Lodge (traditional lodge)
- Wawona Hotel (historic Victorian lodge – currently closed due to roof replacement project)
- Curry Village (traditional cabins and canvas-sided tent cabins)
- Housekeeping Camp (luxury camping experience)
Tuolumne Meadows/Tioga Pass
- Tuolumne Meadows Lodge (canvas-sided tent cabins)
- High Sierra Camps (luxury backcountry experience)
🏕️ There’s also the option to stay at campgrounds throughout Yosemite which is a budget-friendly option as compared to the lodges and fancy tents.
Yosemite West
Yosemite West is a quiet, private community just outside Yosemite’s southwest boundary, accessible only from inside the park via Highway 41.
Once a logging area, it’s now a peaceful forested retreat surrounded by regrown sequoias and remnants of historic rail systems.
Yosemite West offers a variety of vacation rentals including cabins and condos.
It’s only 20 minutes from Yosemite Valley and 30 minutes from Glacier Point and Mariposa Grove.
Be aware, there are no stores or services in this little community, so stock up on food and supplies before you arrive.
Prices for these accommodations are on the higher end, but the lodges are beautiful, and the location is so close to Mariposa Grove, Glacier Point, and Yosemite Valley.

The Southern Miwuk called this place Pallachun, meaning “a good place to stay.”
And it really is a good place to stay offering essentials like gas, groceries, and lodging.
In addition to being a convenient, cozy little town, there are several hiking trails nearby, including Wawona Meadow Loop, Swinging Bridge, Alder Creek, and my personal favorite, Chilnualna Falls.
Wawona is located about 10 minutes from Mariposa Grove, 1 hour from Yosemite Valley, and 1 hour and 30 minutes from Glacier Point.

It’s a peaceful spot with convenient access to the heart of the Yosemite. Be aware, there are no stores or services in Foresta, so stock up on food and supplies before your visit!

Fresno
My husband and I have lived in Fresno off and on over the years, and we’ve made plenty of day trips to Yosemite National Park.
It’s definitely a long drive, but totally doable if you’re just planning to spend one day in Yosemite.
That said, if you’re planning to spend more than a day exploring Yosemite, I wouldn’t recommend staying in Fresno – it’s about 2.5 hours from the city center to Yosemite Valley.
However, I still want to mention accommodation options in Fresno since there is an airport.
Some people fly into the Fresno airport since it’s the closest one to Yosemite.
If your flight gets in late or you’re not planning to drive to your main lodging that same day, you might need a place to stay for a night.
When my husband and I visited Yosemite and Sequoia in 2024, we flew in from North Carolina and stayed one night in Fresno after landing, then again the night before our return flight.
With that being said, here are a few hotel options if you find yourself doing the same!

Little Sandy Campground ($) – This one’s a true off-grid escape. It’s peaceful and quiet with fire pits, a nearby stream, and gorgeous old-growth forest all around. No amenities here so pack everything you need and remember to pack out everything! Also, be aware the road to the campground is a bit rough.
Soquel Campground ($) – Located on the banks of Willow Creek, Soquel has shaded, primitive sites perfect for tents and small trailers. Each site has a picnic table, grill, and fire ring, with vault toilets but no water. Make sure to bring your own.

Arch Rock Entrance (highway 140)
The Arch Rock Entrance is one of the most iconic ways to enter Yosemite. Just before reaching the gate, you’ll drive between two massive boulders that form a natural stone arch over the road.
There’s a small Yosemite National Park sign with mountain peaks in the background and the Merced River to the side – it’s a stunning spot for a picture!
This entrance sits at 2,100 feet and is accessed via Highway 140, also known as the All-Season Highway.
Because it doesn’t climb as high as other routes, it’s usually the safest way to reach Yosemite Valley in the winter. It’s also a great option for RVs and camper vans due to it being less steep.
From here, you’ll have direct access to Yosemite Valley in 25 minutes, and other parts of the park are only about 1.5 hours away.
Nearby towns like El Portal, Midpines, and Mariposa, make great places to stay outside of Yosemite.
🚗 Drive time from Arch Rock Entrance to each region of Yosemite:
- Yosemite Valley – 25 minutes
- Wawona and Mariposa Grove – 1 hour and 1 hour & 10 minutes

El Portal
El Portal is the western gateway to Yosemite National Park and a super convenient place to base yourself if you want quick access to all the natural wonders of the park.
It sits right along the Merced River on Highway 140 and is the closest town to the Arch Rock Entrance.
It’s a tiny town, so don’t expect a bunch of restaurants or shops. There are a few lodging options, a small general store, gas station, post office, and a community center.
You can find more lodging options in the nearby small community of Incline.
If you need more food or supplies, Mariposa is only about 35 minutes down the road.
When my husband and I visited Yosemite in January 2023, we stayed at the Cedar Lodge. Since it was off-season, the prices were really reasonable, and we loved being so close to the park!

Tioga Pass Entrance (highway 120 from the east)
Sitting at nearly 10,000 feet, Tioga Pass begins with a gorgeous climb up from Mono Basin, passing alpine lakes and trailheads before reaching the Tioga Pass Entrance which is the only way into Yosemite from the east.
Once inside the park, Tioga Road takes you through Tuolumne Meadows, a stunning stretch of alpine scenery with fewer crowds than Yosemite Valley.
Keep in mind, it can take a couple of hours to drive from the Tioga Pass Entrance to any other part of the park, so plan accordingly.
If I were to stay near the Tioga Pass Entrance, I would probably just spend my time exploring Tuolumne Meadows and other spots along Tioga Road.
There’s plenty to do in this area, especially if you love hiking!

Tips for Choosing the Best Place to Stay Near Yosemite
It’s important to find a place to stay that matches your plans when visiting Yosemite National Park.
Ask yourself: Where in the park do you want to go? How long will you be there? Are you here to hike, chase waterfalls, take scenic drives, or just stroll through the Valley? What time of year do you want to visit?
These factors can all impact where you stay. Below, I break down the key things to consider when choosing the best place to stay near Yosemite.
📆 Time of Year Matters
When planning your trip, the seasons can make a huge difference!
In winter, Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road are closed along with a few trails due to hazardous winter conditions. However, winter in Yosemite is incredible! Have fun in the snow play areas, go cross country skiing, or try out snowshoeing.
⚠️ Be aware that you will need to carry tire chains with you at all times and be ready to use them if required! Check roads conditions before heading out.
In summer, lower elevations can get brutally hot, especially in Yosemite Valley and the surrounding foothills. However, starting your day early to beat the heat and relaxing in the Merced River can help make adventuring in the summer more tolerable!
Summer is a great time to explore higher elevation areas, such as Glacier Point or Tuolumne Meadows.
Spring and fall often offer the best mix of accessibility and comfortable weather. However, be aware that Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road usually don’t open until May or June.
Mid to late spring into early summer is a great time to see all the waterfalls raging in Yosemite!
💰 Know Your Budget
Lodging close to Yosemite, especially near park entrances, is generally more expensive, especially during peak season (late spring through early fall).
If you’re looking to save money, consider camping, booking during the off-season, or staying a bit farther away and driving in each day.
Sacrificing some comfort or distance can lead to major savings!
🧻 Consider What Amenities You Really Want
Are you someone who craves a comfy bed, fast WiFi, and a hot shower after every hike? Or are you cool with roughing it a little if it means waking up closer to the park and saving some money?
Luckily, Yosemite’s surrounding areas offer a wide range of places to stay.
You’ll find everything from simple hotels, lodges, and cozy vacation rentals with all the essentials, to luxurious resorts with spa access, fitness centers, and scenic lake views.
Campgrounds are plentiful near every Yosemite entrance.
Options range from full-service RV parks with hookups and extra amenities to more off-the-beaten-path national forest campgrounds, which often include picnic tables, vault toilets, and sometimes even potable water.
🏞️ Look at Your Yosemite Itinerary
Where you stay should match up with what you want to do.
Are you planning to hike in Tuolumne Meadows or visit Yosemite Valley? How much driving are you okay with each day?
If you plan to just explore one region, then find a place to stay near the closest entrance that leads to that area.
Consider booking multiple places and bouncing around if you want to explore different sections of the park, especially if you’re camping or traveling in a van or RV.
It can help you cut down on long drives and get the most out of your trip.
Alternate Unique Option (guided tours)
If you want a simple option that requires little to no trip planning? Book a guided tour!
There are plenty of great options from day trips to multi-day trips.
If you’d rather skip the logistics and let someone else handle the planning, here’s a list of guided tours that offer fully organized Yosemite experiences!
This is not an exhaustive list but check out more Yosemite National Park tours on GetYourGuide.

Planning where to stay during your Yosemite adventure can feel overwhelming, especially with the park being so massive and tons of lodging options.
